    FAQs

Q: How can membership in a local chapter help me?
A: By joining a local SHRM-affiliated chapter, you'll gain access to:

    • HR professionals and companies in the community
    • Local professional development opportunities
    • Up-to-date information on legislation
    • HR directors, managers, generalists and specialists who are glad to share information
    • Relationships and contacts with other local companies
    • The opportunity to obtain PHR/SPHR/GPHR recertification credits
    • Leadership skills opportunities

Q: As a SHRM member, am I automatically a member of a local chapter?
A: No. SHRM membership is separate from membership in a local chapter. Each chapter has its own membership application process and dues structure.

Q: As a member of my local chapter, am I automatically a SHRM member?
A: No. Please see the previous answer. To join SHRM, please visit www.shrm.org/join.

Q: When I join a local chapter, should I notify SHRM?
A: Yes. Upon membership in your local chapter, please contact SHRM to update your member record. This is important because your local chapter receives financial support from SHRM based on your membership.

Q: Can I still join UCHRA if I am an unemployed or laid off HR Professional?
A: Yes, of course! In fact, that is probably the best possible place for you to be if you are unemployed or under-employed. Being active in UCHRA allows you to network with other HR professionals, learn about job openings, and stay current with HR trends that are emerging. Being a part of a local SHRM Chapter also shows you are committed to continuing education, as many of UCHRA's sessions are approved for the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) credit.

    Q. What are the membership categories?
    A. UCHRA has three different membership categories.. Please refer to our bylaws for more details. The following is a quick summary.

Professional Membership:  Professional members may vote and hold office. They include those individuals engaged in one or more of the following: a) Practitioners who have 3 years of exempt level HR Management experience b) certified by HRCI c) Faculty members in HR Management (or it's specialized functions) at an accredited institution with at least 3 year of experience teaching at this level d) Full-time attorneys/consultants with at least 3 years of experience practicing/counseling/advising clients in HR Management.

Associate Membership: Associate members may vote or hold office by appointment of the President and with the consent of the Board of Directors. They include individuals in non-exempt HR positions as well as those who do not meet the other categories but have a bona-fide interest in HR Management and the Chapter mission.

Student Membership: Student members may not vote or hold office.  They include FT/PT students enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at a four-year college or graduate institution (or a 2-year community college with an automatic acceptance to a four year college) who can provide verification of demonstrated emphasis in HR subjects and verification of the college's HR or related degree program.
